1. Appropriateness- the gift must fit the occasion and the relationship…you would not get your wife a scale for your anniversary…need I say more
2. Perceptiveness- the gift reflects the givers attentiveness to the tastes and preferences of the recipient…do not take your boss out to dinner at a restaurant that primarily serves seafood if he or she has severe shellfish allergies.
3. Selflessness- the gift reveals that the givers only desire is to please the recipient- expecting nothing in return.
4. Generosity- Resourceful gifts reveal how special the recipient is to the giver. Often our time, effort or creativity are the most generous and memorable characteristics of a gift. Be sure to use a balance here…you do not want the recipient to feel obliged, confused or otherwise uneasy with your generosity.
5. Indulgence- It pampers, humours, appeases, satisfies- the perfect gift says there is something extraordinary about the recipient in the eyes of the giver. An example would be a lawn mower for Dad verses a year’s contract for lawn service. This shows Dad that you value his leisure time- thus his specialness.
6. Surprise- You want to make their eyes widen, their chin drop and make them speechless! Use clever packaging or presentations that heighten suspense and make gifts memorable.
7. Evocation- the moment of truth when the recipient responds to the givers gesture- the perfect gift moves the recipient…with a gasp, a spontaneous smile or tears.
